In Miguel's family, only great-grandmother Coco remembers her papá, a well-known musician who allegedly left his family because of music. Miguel has a passion for music and admires the well-known musician Ernesto de la Cruz.
By chance he discovers the famous guitar of this artist on an old family photo and is enthusiastic. On Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, events escalate: Miguel steals this guitar from a mausoleum. When he wants to play it, something strange happens: Miguel can see the dead in the cemetery and the living walk through him as if he were air.
Together with his deceased relatives, Miguel travels to the fantastic land of the dead to find out how he can come back to life. Along the way, the boy meets the lovable skeleton Héctor, uncovers a well-kept secret, has to fight against a dangerous opponent and realizes that sometimes things are not what they seem.
But time is pressing: Miguel can only leave the land of the dead until sunrise...
